Happy birthday, JK … oh, and you too, Harry!
July 31st should be an international holiday. Though for many of us Potterheads around the world, it is! At least in our hearts.
Because today marks the birthday of Harry Potter (fictional) and J.K. Rowling’s REAL birthday. Yes, the Queen herself gave her main character her same special day.
And while I am not one to normally find myself overly grateful for the birth of a celebrity who doesn’t know my name, well, J.K. Rowling is an exception.
Without her, Harry Potter would not exist.
The boy who lived under the stairs would never have been rescued.
We would live in a world without Hogwarts as an ever-welcoming home, no matter who you are.
What a dark and depressing world it would have been.
Because Harry Potter has taught us what it means to be a person.
We learned how to love and how to be a person who fights for what is right and what they believe in. We learned that not all heroes are perfect and not all bad guys are completely evil (OK with the exception of a certain pink Witch).
J.K. taught us that it doesn’t matter what your colors are — be it green, blue, yellow or red.
We are all humans who deserve happiness, kindness, love, and friendship.
Seriously, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series actually make us better people!
More than that, she created a fandom so powerful that she literally united people of all faiths, race, nationalities, orientation.
A Potterhead is a Potterhead and that’s all that matters to true fans.
And so, on their joint birthday, I feel it would be remiss as a fan and as a proud Gryffindor not to say THANK YOU!
Thank you for saving that 11-year-old boy from under the stairs of number 4 Privet Drive.
Thank you for letting us help him find the Stone, enter the Chamber, rescue the Prisoner, be selected by the Goblet, fight in the Order, learn from the Prince and destroy the Hallows.
Thank you for inspiring generations.
Thank you for giving us magic in a world that may not always deserve some.
Most importantly, thank you for creating Harry Potter.
Without further ado, let’s look back at some of the 11 best Harry Potter quotes that moved us, comforted us, taught us and will continue to inspire us for a lifetime.
